Your Dealer License Questions, Answered.
You'll set up your business, secure a location that meets state premises requirements, complete prerequisites like pre-licensing education, fingerprints and a surety bond, then apply online with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV).
Yes. Texas requires an established and permanent place of business, including a permanent furnished office and a business sign. Retail dealers also need space to display at least five vehicles.
GDN stands for General Distinguishing Number. It's the Texas dealer license TxDMV issues for the type of vehicle you'll buy and sell.
Costs include TxDMV fees, pre-licensing education (TxDMV caps approved courses at $150 per person), a surety bond premium, fingerprinting, business filings, and, usually the biggest item, your location. TxDMV sets its fees, so check its current schedule.
It varies. TxDMV says processing depends on application volume, completeness, fingerprint results and any follow-up review. A complete, accurate application avoids the delays you can control.
You don't have to own the property. A written lease that runs at least the license term works. Wholesale dealers don't need display space, but still need an office and sign.
Retail dealers sell to the public and need display space. Wholesale dealers sell to other dealers and aren't required to maintain display space.
