Wholesale Dealer License

Starting a Wholesale Dealership? Get the Right Licensing Guidance.

A wholesale dealer license can be a smart fit if you plan to buy and sell vehicles with other dealers rather than the public. It also comes with real limits, so it's worth understanding before you apply.

The basics

What this license involves

TxDMV lists the Independent Wholesale Dealer GDN as its own license type. A wholesale dealer generally buys from and sells to other licensed dealers rather than retail customers.

Because wholesale dealers don't sell to the public, Texas law does not require a wholesale applicant to maintain the five-vehicle display space that retail locations need. You still need an established place of business, including a permanent furnished office and a business sign, and you still have to meet the other application requirements.

The trade-off is flexibility: if you later want to sell to everyday buyers, a wholesale license won't cover that. Choosing the right license up front can save you a second application.

Watch out for

Common mistakes and challenges

Assuming wholesale means no office

Wholesale applicants skip the display-space requirement, not the office and sign requirements.

Planning retail sales later

If you want to sell to the public, a wholesale license alone won't allow it.

Incomplete prerequisites

Fingerprints, the surety bond and business filings still apply and must line up with the application.

FAQ

Wholesale Dealer License questions

A wholesale dealer license is intended for sales to other dealers. If you want to sell to retail customers, you'll generally need a retail GDN.

Texas Transportation Code §503.032 states that a wholesale dealer applicant is not required to maintain the display space that retail dealers need. Office and sign requirements still apply.

It avoids the display-space requirement, but it still requires a complete application and an established place of business. Easier depends on your situation.
