GDN stands for General Distinguishing Number. It's what Texas calls the basic dealer license. TxDMV describes it as the license that allows a person to buy, sell or exchange the type of used vehicle for which it's issued.
Types of independent GDNs
TxDMV's licensing guide lists these independent GDN types:
- Independent Motor Vehicle Dealer
- Independent Motorcycle Dealer
- Independent Travel Trailer
- Independent Trailer/Semi-Trailer
- Independent Mobility Motor Vehicle
- Independent Wholesale Dealer
- Independent Wholesale Motor Vehicle Auction
New-vehicle franchised dealers follow a different licensing path.
One location, one GDN
TxDMV rules require a valid GDN for each location from which a dealer does business.
