Starting a dealership is a business launch first and a licensing project second. Here's how to think about the whole thing.
1. Know your model
Retail lot? Wholesale? Specific inventory, like trucks or budget cars? Your model determines your license type, location and capital needs.
2. Plan your money
Budget for setup (business filing, location, sign, office), licensing (fees, education, bond, fingerprints), and operations (inventory, insurance, reconditioning, software). Inventory capital is often what limits new dealers.
3. Form the business
Pick your structure and register with the Texas Secretary of State if applicable. Talk to a CPA about taxes. Texas motor vehicle sales tax rules are administered by the Comptroller.
4. Find a qualifying location
Office, sign, display space for retail, a lease that runs at least the license term, and local zoning approval.
5. Get licensed
Education, bond, fingerprints, application, follow-up.
6. Prepare to operate
Learn the rules about titles, buyer documents and record keeping before your first sale. TxDMV's Motor Vehicle Dealer Manual is a good overview of operating rules.
